The annual Fleming Pie auction is on this week, with an online auction Monday to Thursday, and an in-person auction at the Fleming Community Hall this Saturday, April 11. Baked goods will be on offer for community members to bid on and help fundraise for community green space upgrades.
Amanda Henry of the committee says the event is always a lot of fun—a great evening to visit with neighbours and surrounding community members as friends try to outbid each other for the pies and cakes on offer.
“The in-house auction will be taking place at the Fleming Community Hall on April 11,” she said. “The doors open at 6:30 pm and the auction will begin at 7 pm. We will have Ty Cutler, our local auctioneer, doing the auction again this year.”
Online auction starts Monday
The Fleming Pie online auction will begin this Monday, April 6 at 9 am. Items will be listed on Facebook at 2026 Fleming Pie Auction.
“Our online portion of the event will start at 9 am on April 6 and it will run until April 9 at 9 pm. Anyone can check out the online event on Facebook by searching 2026 Fleming Pie Auction. Once you’re in the event, you can click on the discussion and that is where you will find the items to bid on.
There will be directions posted online so people know what to do for anyone that is new to the event. Pick-up for items from the online auction will be April 10 from 6-8 pm at the Fleming Hall.”
She explains the online portion of the auction started during Covid and has been popular since.
“The online portion started when Covid started. I was new to town at the time, and I brought up the idea of having an online fundraiser because back where I lived in Alberta we had some online fundraisers and they went really well so we decided we would host one here and it was a huge hit. We just continue doing it each year as well because there are lots of people who have lived in Fleming at one point or who are from Fleming and want to support the community, so it was a great way to let people be part of it.”
Community fundraiser
Henry says the proceeds will help update greenery and park space in Fleming.
“This year the proceeds will go toward a few different things. We are planning on updating some of the green space in town for the local community and surrounding area. We are in the early planning stages of upgrading our playground as well as adding a gazebo to the area for people to come and enjoy.
“It has been around for the past 10 years, and over the years lots of the fundraising money goes toward the hall, but we like to try to upkeep the community for people to enjoy.”
Henry has helped organize and plan the event for the last five years.
“I help with contacting people to get pies or whatever baking for the event. I help organize and set up the event. There is about six of us volunteers and community members who help organize the event. Once we have a list of who would like to bake and donate to the event, we then decide what to put online and what to have in the in-house auction.
“It is a fun evening out for the community and surrounding communities to get together. We create a space that kids and families can enjoy and bid on some good homemade baking.”
Community-loved event
Henry says the committee hears positive comments each year from the community on the pie auction.
“The community really enjoys it. A couple years ago we started a kids portion, so we have items geared toward the children and then they get a little bag of fun money, they get a number, and they bid. Once we have a winning item, we just ask that the parents donate however much they want toward the auction. Before we did the kids part of the auction, the kids were bidding for their parents, and it was getting a little high and it was pretty entertaining to watch the kids get excited bidding, so that is why we brought in the kids portion and the community loves it.”
Henry says she welcomes everyone in the area to spend Saturday evening in Fleming.
“People can expect a great evening, lots of visiting, snacks, and drinks are free of charge for everybody, so basically you just come and enjoy yourself, and if you want to bid on a sweet treat, it is very appreciated.”
If anyone is interested in donating to the auction they can send a message online at the Fleming Community Organization page or they can contact Amanda at 1-204-441-0101.
